Childbirth and aging can cause significant changes to the vaginal lips, known as the labia majora and labia minora. Changes such as elongation and asymmetry can contribute to a lack of self-confidence and physical discomfort during intimate situations. In addition, genetics can contribute to enlarged labia that also contribute to physical and emotional distress. Labiaplasty addresses these concerns and allows you to regain confidence and comfort. Here we explore 5 tips to consider after your labiaplasty procedure to help achieve optimal results.

What Is Labiaplasty?

The labia are the folds that protect the vaginal area and all the delicate tissue within. There are two sets of labia, the labia majora (the outer lips) and the labia minora (inner lips). Because every woman’s body is unique, there is no standard when it comes to the shape and size of the labia. However, asymmetry, enlarged size, and elongation due to childbirth can affect self-confidence and become uncomfortable in both intimate settings and daily activities. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the labia to improve the physical appearance as well as relieve the discomfort you experience.

Eat a Healthy Diet and Stay Hydrated

When it comes to labiaplasty recovery, and any surgical recovery in general, it is important that you follow a healthy diet and stay hydrated. What you eat fuels your body’s ability to recover, so you must eat lean protein and foods high in natural vitamins and minerals. In addition, you want to make sure you are drinking plenty of water during your recovery. Staying hydrated helps your body eliminate toxins and reduces postoperative discomfort

Avoid Alcohol and Smoking

Chances are you already know that smoking is not recommended, so this is the perfect time to consider quitting. Smoking affects the body’s immune system and can reduce the ability of the body to process nutrients necessary for healing. If you can’t quit completely, limit your smoking as much as you can during recovery.

In addition to smoking, consuming alcohol during recovery can also slow the healing process. Alcohol can thin the blood, making it slower to clot. This can increase your recovery time and contribute to complications. It is recommended that you abstain from alcohol for2 to 4 weeks before your surgery and at least 2 weeks after.

Apply a Cold Compress

Post-surgical swelling can contribute to discomfort during your labiaplasty recovery. Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the vaginal area can help to reduce this swelling and alleviate any discomfort you may experience.

No Tampons or Menstrual Cups

If your period begins during your recovery period, you are limited to using sanitary pads. Do not use tampons or menstrual cups as they can cause significant discomfort and affect the healing process. You must change pads often and wear clothing that allows for air and friction reduction to reduce the risk of infection.

No Sex During Recovery

While you may have chosen labiaplasty to help eliminate discomfort during sex, you can’t jump into bed during your recovery period. Your body needs time to heal the incisions so they are strong enough for sexual activity. This can take up to eight weeks post-labiaplasty. Your surgeon will recommend when you can resume sexual activity.
